On the Homefront; a Scrapbook of Canadian World War II Memorabilia
by Mary Jane Lennon in collaboration with Syd Charendoff - Published by The Boston Mills Press, Ontario, 1981 - 128 pages
The book is a very informative and interesting resource about the home front. In the Preface, the authors state, "This is not a history book. It is a scrapbook compiled from bits and pieces of history … a collage of images from what was undoubtedly the most exhilarating, terrifying and exasperating era in our nation's history." They go on to say, "Most of the items represented here are Canadian in content and origin … . Finally, and most important, we tried to make the book fun to read."
The publication presents a wonderful assortment of photographs, advertisements, headlines, cartoons, government notices, posters, magazine and comic book covers, calendars, matchbooks, games, and memorabilia. Most images appear in black and white, but some are in beautiful colour. Some text has been inserted with the images, making the book very informative - a
treasure of material about Canada during the Second World War.
[Note: The staff of the MacNaught History Centre acquired a copy of
On the Homefront after the website had been prepared and were delighted to discover some of the same images had been selected from the Summerside newspapers. This book is very entertaining and as the authors hoped, "fun to read."]
