(Evacuees and War Brides)

Elizabeth Carruthers taught Grade Two at the Parkside School for the school years ending 1941 and 1942. She recalls being hired as a tutor to assist George Newton with his studies. She would go to the Holman house on Beaver Street after school about once a week. With the money she earned from that extra work, she purchased two wool blankets from MacAusland's. She still has the blankets after sixty years.

Peter Pope remembers meeting the Newton boys for the first time. He was in his pyjamas when he came downstairs the evening that Ellen and Bill Morrison took them around to meet the neighbourhood children. He recalls being intrigued by their accents and says that the kids on the street referred to the boys as the refugees. His sister Mary became quite friendly with Albert who had an outgoing personality.

Windsor Corney remembers being in school with Albert Newton who fit right in. He says that "the girls were crazy about him."

Grant Mollison remembers both Newton boys joining his Boy Scout troop. George also became a member of the local Air Cadet squadron.
