Nutrition

Canada needed a healthy population during the war. This motivated the government to begin to study the importance of good nutrition in the lives of its citizens. Scientists were beginning to understand the importance of vitamins and minerals in human health. The federal Department of Pensions and National Health started a campaign called "Food for Fitness." It introduced Canada's Official Food Rules, developed in July 1942, the forerunner of the Canada Food Guide. I have been labeled starchy.

Things To Do!!!
  • Has the Food Guide changed over the years? If so, for what reason?
  • Plan a Victory Garden for your family. Counting the number of people in your family, what would you consider the square footage your garden would need in order to provide enough produce?
  • Lay out what vegetable crops you will need to grow by taking into account fresh consumption and winter storage. How will you preserve your vegetables? There is a shortage of cans for canning and sugar is rationed. Did you remember to apply for extra sugar by the April 15th deadline? Are there some crops you can dry? For example, peas can be eaten fresh or dried on the vine for soups and casseroles.
  • Would a root cellar be a good investment for you?
