Black Market

Civilians working in wartime industries were making good money but found they had very little to spend it on. Price controls made the necessities of life fairly affordable and rationing equally distributed them among the population. Price controls made it hard for producers and manufacturers to raise the profit line. Wanting extra goods created a dilemma that encouraged many otherwise honest people to explore the black market. It seemed there was always someone who had a supply of something that they were willing to sell privately for a nice profit. Often the goods would have mysteriously come from the military.

Things To Do!!!
  • Most of the items sold on the black market were stolen, most often the source being the military. Does this in turn cost the taxpayer?
  • Items sold on the black market do not have taxes paid on them. Who does this hurt?
  • Items on the black market were often sold cheaper. Why do you think this would be the case?
  • Who do you think bought black market items?
  • A person caught buying black market items could be charged with theft. Is there a time it is justifiable to turn to the Black Market?
  • Why do you think some people feel they have a right to make a profit at the expense of the government?
