DEHYDRATION PLANT SHAREHOLDERS TOLD OF DIFFICULTIES
The annual meeting of the shareholders of Island Foods, Inc., Summerside, was held Tuesday in the office of the dehydration plant, with the president, Mr. A. A. Scales, presiding, and nearly all the shareholders present.
Reporting on the activities of the past year Mr. Scales said the quantity of potatoes dehydrated was not quite up to that of the previous year, due to a five-weeks lay-off when the contract had been temporarily cancelled by the British Ministry of Food. Notwithstanding the high cost of potatoes, he said, the cost per dry pound compared favorably with the preceding year. The dryness of the potatoes during the season resulted in a higher than average yield of dehydrated product.
Mr. Scales explained that even if contracts could now be secured they would be unable to operate because of a ruling of the Summerside Water and Sewerage Commission.
He declared that when the decision to build in Summerside had been made the town had agreed to supply the plant with a suitable sewage system and maintain it. He read a letter which had been recently received from the commission in which the company was forbidden to make use of the sewage system to dispose of the waste products. Mr. Scales said that up until this letter had been received efforts were being made to obtain the contracts for the coming season.
The meeting expressed disappointment at the situation as it was felt that this meant that under the conditions specified it would be impossible to dehydrate potatoes at the present location of the plant
