The town of Summerside was very aware of the role it could play in providing various forms of recreation and entertainment for the Air Force personnel. The training at the School was short and intense and there was a need for the trainees and the staff to have an opportunity to relax and have some fun.

Some airmen quickly found girlfriends among the locals and liked to socialize with their chosen sweetheart and other couples. Many single men took advantage of the recreational facilities established by the Y's Men, the Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. When the opportunity arose, they were happy to enjoy the hospitality of citizens who encouraged and welcomed their company for an evening, a Sunday afternoon, or a short leave. Other airmen took part in organized activities on the Station such as sports, card games, singsongs and movies. "This is arranged especially for the masculine wall-flowers who have no heart interest to attract them to Summerside" to quote the writer of the "News from No. 9" on November 22, 1941.

The arrival of the Women's Division in March 1942 meant a little less socializing in town, as the single men turned their attention to the females living on the Station. However, the change in training schools in July 1942 and the subsequent influx of many more personnel in 1943-44 to the St. Eleanors and Mount Pleasant Schools meant that there was considerable involvement by Air Force members in the social life of the town.

The broad topic of recreation has been divided into the following pages: Dances, Music, Excursions, Sports, and Christmas.
