Even before the No. 9 SFTS opened, the community rallied in December 1940 to offer some Christmas hospitality to the airmen already at the newly constructed Station. A special form in the newspaper invited the public to take guests and as a result about 40 men were entertained in private homes at Christmas and over 100 on New Year's Day. 
The following December, invitations were once again extended to RCAF personnel to be entertained in citizens' homes. The two airport chaplains, F/Lt. Anderson and F/Lt. Butler dealt with the arrangements of matching airmen to homes in Summerside and area. On Christmas day a small group of entertainers representing the Red Cross Society visited the Station where some airmen were hospitalized. "The patients expressed their appreciation and thanks for the Christmas spirit shown by those who remembered them by making their Christmas bright and cheerful."
The success of the Christmas hospitality program was evidenced in a Summerside Journal editorial of December 20, 1943. "It is hoped therefore that once more as at previous Yuletide periods a large proportion of our citizens will once more offer them a share of that warm hospitality and further cement the good feeling which has always existed between the airmen and the citizens.
