The MacNaught History Centre and Archives has a small reference library available to visitors. It is not our intention to list the titles of our complete library. A separate section is devoted to rare books, which include Past and Present of Prince Edward Island, published by B. F. Bowen circa 1906. It was edited by D.A. MacKinnon and A. B. Warburton and includes biographical sketches of prominent Islanders of the day. The value of this extensive work is enhanced by an index of over 12,000 entries, arranged by surname, which was prepared by David W. Dystant and published by the P.E.I. Genealogical Society in the year 2000.
The reading room offers to researchers the use of two excellent atlases. The Illustrated Historical Atlas of Prince Edward Island was published by J. H. Meacham in 1880 and maps out each lot or township with landowners marked and listed. The Atlas of Prince Edward Island published by the Cummins Map Company in 1928 also gives detailed drawings of the individual lots with landowners identified.
Another excellent resource is the 1973 publication of the Surveys and Mapping Branch of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. It was prepared by Alan Rayburn and is entitled Geographic Names of Prince Edward Island. It is a good reference tool to check the lot # of a specific community and also to view a concise history of a place name.
