Historical Summerside

Heritage Murals
The Mural Program was started in 1996 when a partnership between the City and Tourism PEI lead to the commissioning of a 400 sq. ft. mural depicting the Great Fire of 1906 (located on the Fire Hall, 248 Fitzroy St., west wall, behind the Community Services Building). The mural is the work of artist Greg Garland, and was completed in the summer of 1997. [ View Murals ]

Summerside Hospitality During World War II
The World War Two period in Summerside was an exciting but poignant era in this small town’s history. Established in the 19th century as a commercial and transportation centre that later became home to the international silver fox industry, Summerside in 1940 embarked upon a new adventure. The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) established a school on farmland in North St. Eleanors on the outskirts of town, and almost everyone rejoiced. Nothing would be the same again. The story of the interaction between Air Force personnel and Summerside residents is unique and at the same time similar to other BCATP sites. Travel back now, to read about and enjoy the images from Summerside Hospitality During World War Two

The World War II Home Front in Summerside Prince Edward Island
Are you interested in what life was like in a Canadian town during the years 1939-1945? While battles were being fought on various fronts in Europe and Asia, Canadian civilians were engaged in another type of fighting. They were busy on the “home front” doing whatever was required to ensure victory for the Allied countries. We invite you to experience what life was like in the patriotic town of Summerside presented under the following themes: Government, Community, Outreach, War’s End, and Perspectives. Teachers and students of all ages are invited to make use of the Educational section. Take this unique opportunity to explore national Canadian themes as they played out in the local setting of Summerside P.E.I., and compare it to what happened in your hometown.
